Slainte | Solid Gold Ogham Inscribed Earrings | Martina Hamilton

About this piece

Sláinte is the Irish word that bestows good health upon another, and Ogham (pronounced O.M.) writing is the earliest known form of writing in Ireland.
Predating the Latin and Irish of ancient monastic paper manuscripts, Ogham was instead carved into standing stones. 360 of these standing stones survive in Ireland, dating from centuries that saw the collapse of the Roman Empire across Europe and before arrival of Christianity to Ireland.
Martina has taken this timeless greeting and Gaelic wish for good health to be bestowed upon those we love and hold dear, and etches it in Ogham into a beautiful set of solid gold drop earrings. As with so much of Martina’s jewellery she seeks to emulate the raw natural weathered beauty of ancient Ogham standing stones through her lustrous surfaces and the deep etching of the Ogham characters. The edges of the gold bars are given fluidity and softness with gently sculpted sides.
